There’s been another internet storm because of James Cameron’s comments, this time about Avengers: Infinity War.
According to Indiewire, James made the colossal mistake of having an opinion by saying:
“I’m hoping we’ll start getting ‘Avenger’ fatigue here pretty soon,” Cameron said. “Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”
As one would guess, the internet went completely bat-shit on James. The social bugs of the internet are now buzzing all over the place, calling the man everything out of his name but a child of God. Allow me to start off my 2 Cents response to this madness with this – James Cameron can bloody well say whatever the hell he wants! And No, I’m not British!
Kevin Feige recently responded by simply deflecting to James’ comment about loving the movies, and left it there. You can read more on all that here because quite frankly, it’s already everywhere so no use in repeating everything that was said. But people’s response to that was weird and overblown too. Even my co-worker said, “Kevin Feige is a real classy dude. Look at that perfect response. Get him, Kev!” What?! Oh Shut up. Dudes, Kevin respects the hell out of James Cameron. They’re probably sitting chilling at a celebrity bar right now having a beer to all of this. Fans just want to see a catfight so bad, they’re just harping on every word.
Listen, I would’ve advised James to not say anything like that if I were lucky enough to be his advisor. Not because he’s wrong. It’s an opinion and as a bonafide Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, I understand what he’s saying in a sense, though I don’t necessarily agree with why he’s saying it. But I would’ve warned him about saying something so controversial about Marvel in particular. It’s no different from attacking Beyonce or Oprah Winfrey. You’re going to be bombed. Just like Jodie Foster’s comments early this year about comic book movies and even Steven Speilberg’s comments a few years ago about superhero movies’ eventual demise. They were venomously attacked online as well.

His timing could’ve been better too. With Black Panther’s domestic overperformance and Infinity War looking to take more than one crown, a few hairs are going to raise. Is James jealous of Marvel’s success? I seriously doubt that. But there seems to be an opposing consensus about superhero movies from industry giants – they’ve become the only type of movies fans will flock to see regardless if they’re actually good or not. That’s another article waiting to be written – and I will write it! However, I will say here that their concerns are ones that we could only understand if we were also directors in the business. Their views on why a movie underperforms or fails in this climate may be incorrect. But they should be allowed to have an opinion and share it with the world – JUST LIKE WE DO.
Freedom of Speech is what it is. An opinion will breed another opposing one, I get that. But the problem I’m having is the sheer disrespect being shown by the nameless, faceless internet zealots who plague the social feeds. You may not like what James had to say but this man has accomplished what no one has in their career or lifetime. Two of the top-grossing movies of all time are by James Cameron – Avatar and Titanic. Both fantastic films! (I never understood the hate Avatar gets but I’ll get into that in another article)

James Cameron’s comments didn’t bother me in the least. Trust me, Kevin Feige, Marvel, nor Disney needs your protection. In my opinion, Avengers: Infinity War has a real chance of becoming the #1 highest grossing movie of all time. I hope it does. More importantly, I hope it deserves it. It could still suck for all we know. Even if that turns out to be the case, leave James Cameron alone. That man is responsible for some the greatest films of our time. I don’t care if he hasn’t put out a movie in almost a decade or if he’s working on 15 Avatar movies no one asked for. He will always be the James Cameron who brought us The Terminator, Aliens, and so much more. So let the man speak, show some respect and SHUT YOUR HOLES.
I seriously have NO interest in another Avatar film. But whatever.
