Robin Hood 2018 Trailer | I’m seeing a pattern here

To say that I literally tripped on a rock and saw this Robin Hood 2018 trailer out of nowhere would be very close to accurate – since I didn’t really trip on a rock. But it sure felt like it.

I heard absolutely nothing about this movie before today. And it reminds me of Guy Richie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – a film I happen to enjoy despite its flaws and mediocre reviews. There’s even a sniff of that god awful Assassin’s Creed in there.

Starring in this film will be Taron Egerton as Robin Hood, Jamie Foxx as Little John, and Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Before I go any further, let me be clear on something. You will never see me complain about changing the race of a character unless you’re making a documentary. Wasn’t a fan of that Gods of Egypt film but I didn’t take it seriously enough to see a bunch of white Egyptian gods. That was just a bad movie. With that said, you all know I’m talking about Jamie Foxx. Not a huge fan. Jamie’s work in Ray was absolutely brilliant. But he just doesn’t do it for me as a bonafide actor. To see him take on the role of “Little John”, I’m already looking at this film with a smoky eye.

Then there’s Taron Egerton playing the main guy. I mean, he was ok in Kingsman. But that was a great movie – the first one anyway. Seeing him in this trailer isn’t exciting me either. He’s a decent actor but he’s not going to save this film if the story goes south.

Lastly, we have Ben Mendelsohn. This guy I like. Though he’s been typecasted as an antagonist in several recent films, he plays a good one nonetheless.

Robin Hood 2018 looks like another bomb if I’m to be honest. Some high budgeted, slow motion, medieval fantasy thriller with guitars. And therein lays the pattern I’m seeing. Even though I liked the film, for the most part, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword didn’t knock it out of the park. In fact, it got lucky because Guy Richie is a good director and his mark somewhat saved that film. Robin Hood is being directed by Otto Bathurst. “Otto Who??” Exactly! I have no idea who this guy is. From what I’ve read, he directed some BBC TV shows/episodes but that’s about it.

No one’s a bigger fan of medieval fantasy than me. Game of Thrones is one of my absolute favorites shows of all time, though I was very disappointed with the last few seasons. The books are fantastic, by the way. I just don’t want to see these moviemakers stink up the genre with…stinkers. The Robin Hood lore was never a big draw for me to begin with but I’m still hoping for a good iteration.

However, I thoroughly enjoyed Kevin Reynolds’ Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman. It wasn’t a great movie but it didn’t take itself too seriously, had some heart, and was a joy to experience. Let’s not even talk about that one with Russell Crowe.

So, I’m open to a new take but this trailer has me worried. I won’t be first in line to see this film but…guess I’ll give it a shot eventually……..This movie’s gonna suck, isn’t it?
